STUDENT TEAM PLACES FOURTH IN STEEL BRIDGE COMPETITION

Boston, MA—April 18, 2012—Wentworth Institute of Technology’s student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) earned fourth place overall in the 2012 Northeast Regional Student Steel Bridge Competition.

Wentworth’s interdisciplinary team of civil engineering, civil engineering technology, construction management, and electromechanical engineering students competed against 12 other participating colleges and universities in the competition, which focused on increasing student awareness of real-world engineering issues. The challenge required students to design, fabricate, and construct a 30-inch-wide, 23-foot-long, 3-foot-tall steel bridge that could hold 2,500 pounds. A significant aspect of the competition is speed of construction, as no one piece can be longer than 36 inches, nor weigh more than 20 pounds. The structure was judged on construction speed, lightness, deflection, efficiency, and display.

Kevin Gebo, BCET ’12, captain of Wentworth’s team, was proud of the team members who worked over seven months preparing for the competition. “We spent 2,000 cumulative hours for this,” said Gebo. “The team’s commitment, focus, and dynamics were great. From initial design concept to final fabrication, everyone worked well together.” “It’s a student-led effort. They worked hard, represented Wentworth extremely well, and should be recognized for their achievement,” said team advisor and professor Michael Davidson. “The students were able to fabricate some of the bridge connections in Wentworth’s new Manufacturing Center, and they are excited to build on their success and eager to start again this fall.”

The 10 team members are Kevin Gebo, BCET ’12 (captain); Beth Bardsley, BCET ’13 (vice-captain); Jake Fowler, BCET ’13 (vice-captain); Jonathan Delgado, BCET ’12; Mark Groendyk, BCET ’12; Kyle St. George, BCMT ’13; Sean Amaral, BELM ’13; Ryan Cameron, BCET ’13; Brendan Cioto, BSCE ’14; and Cody Gibb, BSCE ’14. Salem Metal Fabricators, Dale Rogers Studio, BOND, and Boston Society of Civil Engineers sponsored Wentworth’s student team in this year’s competition.
